Wandering Off

Alzheimer's Patient Wandering Off

Lack of Supervision can lead to Tragedy

Alzheimer's patients and dementia sufferers are susceptible to "elopement," or wandering off. Once a resident exits a nursing home, he or she is no longer under its care and protection. He or she is vulnerable to injury and assault. Even if the resident is not physically harmed, he or she can also become disoriented and distressed.

Since I became an attorney, my practice has focused exclusively on nursing home neglect and abuse lawsuits. If your loved one wandered away from a nursing home because of nursing home wrong doing, call me, Brad Lundeen, for a free consultation.

Elopement Risks

Nursing home residents wandering off the premises due to lack of supervision are at risk for many injuries, such as

  • Severe sunburn and heatstroke
  • Broken bones from falling
  • Burns, from 1st to 3rd degree
  • Disorientation
  • Sexual or physical assault
  • Bee bites
  • Traffic related injuries

Tragically, wandering off can also prove fatal. I have handled wrongful death cases where individuals wandered away and were killed in traffic--sometimes right outside the building.

Preventing Elopement

Care facilities who house patients with reduced mental capacity must have a certified Alzheimer's unit. They need properly trained staff. They also need enough staff to adequately supervise their charges.
