Areas of Abuse and Neglect

Unattended Health Problems

A Sign of Neglect

As a rule, a nursing home population is generally not strong or healthy. Elderly people who break bones or get sick will suffer more, and take longer to heal than their younger counterparts. Sadly, some illnesses and injuries are inevitable. However, there are certain conditions that can only be the result of neglect. If you believe that your loved one was infected or injured because of improper care or misconduct, call Lundeen Law, PLLC to talk to an experienced elder abuse attorney.

Respiratory Concerns

If a resident needs a respirator, those lines have to be clean. Any buildup can result in decreased oxygen levels or infection. Untreated, this can cause serious illness.

Catheters

Many nursing home residents rely on catheters. According to federal regulation, the nursing home staff is supposed to flush all urinary, foley, and colon catheters at least once a day. If there is inadequate staff, they might not follow procedure. Not keeping a clean catheter can lead to serious infection.

Pain Management

Nursing home residents are supposed to have adequate drugs to manage their pain. Failure to adequately manage pain is inadequate care and may be grounds for medical malpractice.

Infected Wounds and Undiagnosed Injuries

Wounds sometimes happen. Residents who have hypertension, diabetes, or poor skin are especially susceptible. Even so, the staff should know the source of residents' injuries. Furthermore, there is no good reason for an infected wound. The only way wounds become infected is if the staff is not treating the wounds.
